Shelter

For every policy taken out, £10 is donated to Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity.

It's hard to imagine but in Britain today over 1.6 million children live in homes that are squalid, overcrowded or insecure. The effect on their health, their education, and their chances in life can be devastating.

More than one million people a year visit Shelter for advice and support via its website, helplines and national network of services. Shelter helps people to find and keep a home in a place where they can thrive.

Families like Martin, Claire and their two children. Three years ago, Martin was made redundant, and struggled to find new work. After six months of unemployment, Martin's mortgage protection insurance ran out and the family began to fall into arrears. Martin's home was finally repossessed – and sold at a loss. The council refused to re-house the family, claiming they had made themselves 'intentionally homeless'.

Martin and Claire moved into a van parked outside Claire's parents' house, miles from their original home. The children, who had been forced to change schools, slept indoors with their grandparents.

Mortified, Martin turned to Shelter, who persuaded the council to reconsider, and Martin's family was allocated a temporary flat. Martin had racked up huge debts trying to keep his family afloat.

Martin's luck turned when he found a more suitable flat to rent through a friend. Now settled, Martin’s family are finally able to pay off their debts.

To protect the identity of the individuals and families featured, we have changed the names and certain details of their stories, and models have been used in photographs. However, the essential facts remain true.

Shelter also tackles the root causes of the housing problem by lobbying national and local government for better policies and greater investment to improve conditions and lives.

The valuable contributions Shelter receives do make a difference and that's why The Co-operative Insurance will donate £10 to Shelter when you take out your home insurance policy with us.
