Greener driving tips

Reduce your C02 emissions

Reduce your C02 emissions with Co-operative car insurance

If you follow these simple greener driving tips you can reduce your costs whilst also reducing your CO2 emissions even further.

How

Follow these advanced driving techniques to improve fuel economy, lower costs, more safety and cleaner air:

  • Watch your speed - you can improve your fuel economy by about 25 percent and reduce your car's emissions simply by driving at 50 mph rather than 70 mph.
  • Don't be idle - turn off the engine if you expect a lengthy wait, and park up and go inside instead of using the DriveThru - you'll save fuel, reduce your emissions and increase the performance of your catalytic converter.
  • Smooth operator - Sharp acceleration and sudden braking use more fuel - by accelerating and decelerating gradually, you can improve your fuel efficiency by around 30%.
  • Go easy on the air con - Air conditioning in cars increases emissions and decreases fuel economy by as much as one and a half kilometres for every two litres - turn yours off as soon as your car has cooled to a comfortable temperature or, better still, use your air vents.
  • Look after your car - A well maintained car can use less fuel than one that is badly maintained - for every 6psi a tyre is under-inflated, fuel consumption can rise by 1%.
  • Remember if you take out your car insurance with The Co-operative Insurance, we’ll offset 20% of your car’s C02 emissions as standard. Find out more.
